💫 Superpower to Kryptonite - When What Built Everything Starts Sending You a Bill

Welcome to the Quiet Ambition newsletter - a place where we…

💫 stop holding (ourselves) back on ambition and personal growth

💫 define, build and own a meaningful legacy

💫 make the impact we’re meant to make

On our terms. Without fuss. And without selling souls.

OPEN the STUDIO DOOR

Last week I asked you to match seven paradoxes to seven switching taxes.

This week - the key. And a story about what happens when the very thing that made you starts sending you the bill.

We're also at the halfway point of the year. Which means this issue carries two things - a personal piece in The Switching Tax series, and an invitation to pause, look back, and look forward.

What’s happening in the studio today?

  • WARM UP - 1 QUESTION to ask about recalibrating for the second half of the year
  • POSTED NOTES - 1 QUOTE about wholeness - embracing both the gift and the cost
  • THE STUDIO FLOOR - 1 FRAMEWORK about superpowers and kryptonite (plus the answer key from last week).

The studio is open - let's begin.

WARM UP

Before we dive into today's work, let's warm up.

Half the year is behind you. What needs recalibrating for the second half? Not just what you should do more of, but what needs to shift in how you're doing it?

Recalibrating isn't starting over. It's adjusting the instrument so the music comes out right.

POSTED NOTES

Palmer wrote this about vocation - the relationship between your gifts and your shadows. The things that make you capable and the things that cost you aren't separate.

They come as a set.

The Switching Tax series has been building toward this. The superpower and the kryptonite share the same root. Wholeness means holding both, not fixing one and celebrating the other.

Which part of yourself have you been trying to “fix,” when the invitation is simply to hold it with honesty?

THE MARQUEE

📋 Quiet Ambition MID-YEAR CHECK-IN

Hit REPLY and share yours. I'd love to celebrate the first half with you before we build the second.

THE STUDIO FLOOR

📌 THE ANSWER KEY - Issue 10 Paradox Challenge

Last week I asked you to match seven paradoxes to seven switching taxes. Here's the key:

💫 "The willing tax is still a tax." - Role Switching Tax

💫 "The tax you can't name costs the most." - Value Switching Tax

💫 "The fluency that created belonging now prevents depth." - Code Switching Tax

💫 "The range that made you relatable made you harder to find." - Identity Switching Tax

💫 "The productivity that looked like progress was often its opposite." - Task Switching Tax

💫 "The voice that served everyone eventually stopped serving you." - Register Switching Tax

💫 "The kindest choice in the moment is often the costliest choice over time." - Context Switching Tax

How did you do? If you missed last week's issue, you can find it here.

My switching superpower built everything I have.

Role switching. Task switching. Context switching. Register switching. These skills working together as a kind of extraordinary adaptability. The ability to move across industries, roles, cultures, and registers. To connect with people across enormous differences. To do excellent work in many different contexts at once.

For a long time, this felt like a gift. Then the portfolio expanded.

Over the last several years, everything grew. New recognition as an artist. New roles - author, writer, speaker, voice over artist - added to an already full inventory. New opportunities arriving from years of quiet cultivation. Not to mention, getting older and my preferences changing.

From the outside, it looked like abundance. Everyone was thrilled with what I was doing for them.

The problem? I wasn't happy with how things were going for me.

The moment I finally saw it clearly wasn't dramatic. It was a list. I sat down one day and looked at my unfinished projects. Choreography waiting. Writing stalled. Exciting ideas sitting in suspended animation.

I finish everything I start. So a list of unfinished projects didn't just disappoint me. It raised a question I couldn't easily answer.

How did I get here?

I now understand the switching taxes had been running without my full awareness. Quiet. Simultaneous. Expensive.

💫 The Task Switching Tax charging me before I even sat down to create

💫 The Context Switching Tax shortening the creative runway every time I tried to enter deep work

💫 The Role and Register Switching Tax expanding alongside the portfolio - more roles, more registers, more of me required in more contexts

The willing tax is still a tax. And I had been paying all four without tracking the bill.

The superpower didn't fail me. It scaled beyond my operating system to manage it.

The same adaptability I used to build everything now made it harder to do the work required. The switching I used to open doors now made it hard to walk through any one of them fully.

That's the kryptonite hiding inside the superpower.

The turn wasn't a framework or a revelation. It was a decision.

To look at the list honestly.

To stop pretending the switching wasn't costing me

To start moving things forward - one at a time, with protected time, with intentional transitions

Most of all, with the awareness the taxes are real even when the switching is willing.

I'm not on the other side of this. But I'm moving. And moving with awareness lands differently than the reflexive switching that got me to that list.

The question underneath all of it isn't whether to switch. I switch (and many of you do as well). The range is the tool.

The question is whether you're choosing the switch, or it's controlling you.

And whether the superpower you've built is still serving the work you're here to do - or whether it becomes the thing standing between you and it.

Where has your superpower started sending you the bill?
