OPEN the STUDIO DOOR

What if the thing you've been calling a strength is actually costing you the most?

Today we open a new series - one I've been sitting with for a while, and landed on me sideways during a coaching call.

It's called The Switching Tax. And there's a good chance you've been paying it for years (and in more ways than one)..

What's happening in the studio today?

  • WARM UP 1 QUESTION to ask yourself about what you have been calling “capacity”
  • POSTED NOTES1 QUOTE to reframe what your attention is worth
  • THE STUDIO FLOOR1 FRAMEWORK to identify where you’ve been overpaying

The studio is open. Let's begin.

WARM UP

Before we dive into today's work, let's warm up.

What is one thing you've been calling efficiency you now recognize costs you something?

Sit with this before you read on. The answer that comes fastest is probably the most honest one.

POSTED NOTES

Dr. Mark has spent twenty years in the field, watching real people work in real time. This isn't her productivity opinion. It's rooted in data.

The tank leaks. And for those of us who've built our identity around doing more, holding more, switching more, that's not a minor finding. It serves as a reckoning.

What have you been telling yourself about your tank?

THE MARQUEE

WANT TO GO DEEPER on the research behind today's quote? Gloria Mark's Attention Span is the book, and her Talks at Google session is a great 45-minute starting point if you'd rather watch than read.

👉🏽 The New Science of Finding Focus & Fighting Distraction

THE STUDIO FLOOR

I was on a virtual coaching call when it happened… and it didn't happen to me.

Someone else in the room was having the moment. A brilliant, capable woman who kept describing the same feeling - running at full speed, going nowhere. Doing everything right, and still ending every week feeling behind.

And then someone named it.

"You're paying a switching tax. And you don't even know you're being charged."

The room went quiet. I watched her face shift. Then I felt it land on me.

Because I had been carrying the same thing, for years. I just had different names for it.

💫 Efficiency

💫 Multitasking

💫 Large bandwidth

I had worn those words like badges. Built my professional (and personal) identity around them.

I can hold a lot.

I can be what the room needs.

I can move between things quickly.

Turns out, I had been sawing off the branch I was sitting on, and calling it pruning.

Here's what I know now that I didn't then.

Switching isn't neutral. Every switch has a cost. And most of us are paying multiple switching taxes simultaneously, without a single line item on the bill.

There are seven of them. You may not realize it, but you’re likely acquainted with a few of them.

💫 Role switching

💫 Task switching

💫 Code switching

💫 Value switching

💫 Identity switching

💫 Context switching

💫 Register switching

Most of us are paying at least three at once. And most of us have given them much friendlier names.

What stopped me on that coaching call wasn't the concept. It was the recognition.

I am…

👉🏽 a Bharatanatyam artist who walks into business collaboration meetings

👉🏽 a teacher who becomes a different person with a ten-year-old student than with an adult student than with a peer

👉🏽 an entrepreneur who holds a creative vision in one hand and a budget spreadsheet in the other

👉🏽 a cultural translator who has spent years learning how to make what I do legible to rooms that weren't built with me in mind

I switch. Constantly. Fluently. And for a long time, that fluency felt like a superpower.

What I didn't see, and what the coaching call cracked open, was the long, running tab.

The low-grade tiredness I've normalized. The sense of always being almost caught up. The quiet, persistent feeling of being less than the sum of my own parts.

That's not a capacity problem. That's a switching tax.

The taxes aren't character flaws. These switches were adaptations. They help us belong, connect, survive, build. The switching got us somewhere real.

But there's a difference between a switch you make deliberately, with full awareness of the cost, and a switch that happens before you've registered the situation.

Tool versus Reflex

And reflexes, by definition, don't wait for your permission.

This series is about learning to tell the difference. Not about switching less, necessarily. About switching consciously.

Starting with recognizing the bill.

Over the coming weeks, we'll go deeper on each tax. Personal stories, honest reckonings, and the question underneath it all - are you choosing the switch, or is it choosing you?

COOL DOWN

To COOL DOWN today - Can you take 30 seconds to hit REPLY and share one switching tax you recognized in yourself while reading? I’d really love to hear from you, every message matters.

Warmly,
Suchi
