Welcome to the Quiet Ambition newsletter - a place where we… 💫 stop holding (ourselves) back on ambition and personal growth 💫 define, build and own a meaningful legacy 💫 make the impact we’re meant to make On our terms. Without fuss. And without selling souls. OPEN the STUDIO DOORWhat do you do when the Switching Tax you're paying is also the thing that made you? When the switch that cost you is also the switch that got you here? When the quality that holds you back is the same quality that makes you exceptional? That's not a problem to solve. That's a paradox to sit with. We've named seven switching taxes across this series. Now to reflect on the harder question. This week in The Switching Tax series - seven contradictions, one for each tax. No recipes. No resolution. Just the honest complexity of what it means to switch with intention rather than by accident. ● WARM UP - 1 QUESTION about the contradictions you're carrying right now The studio is open. Let's begin. WARM UPBefore we dive into today's work, let's warm up. What contradiction are you carrying right now that you've been trying to resolve - when perhaps the invitation is simply to hold it more honestly? Some tensions don't need to be fixed. They need to be named. POSTED NOTESFitzgerald wrote this from inside his own breakdown, not from the other side of it. Not with resolution in hand. That matters. Because the paradoxes in today's newsletter aren't offered as problems with solutions. They're offered as truths worth holding. Once named, the paradoxes change how you carry them… even when they don't go away. Which opposed idea are you holding right now? And are you still retaining the ability to function? THE MARQUEEThe paradoxes in today's issue aren't problems to solve. They're polarities to manage. Barry Johnson has spent 50 years thinking about exactly this distinction. Watch his conversation at The Stoa for an introduction to why some tensions can never be resolved - only navigated. 📖 BONUS - Polarity Management by Barry Johnson is the book behind the concept. The most rigorous framework ever written on managing tensions that can't be solved. THE STUDIO FLOORThe same quality that makes you exceptional at something often costs you the most. Not despite your strengths. Because of them. As an example, I feel this acutely across three roles I inhabit - teacher, artist, and coach/mentor. As a teacher, depth of care makes me effective. The investment in each student as a whole person, not just a dancer, is the same thing that makes boundaries difficult to hold. The same quality creating transformation in a student is the quality that makes it hard to say no, protect my time, and not carry their progress as my personal responsibility. The gift and the weight share the same root. As an artist, the commitment to excellence and creative integrity that makes the work meaningful - the refusal to settle, the insistence on depth - is the same thing that makes it hard to release work, to declare something finished, to move at a pace the world rewards. The standard protecting the art can also slows it. The gift and the bottleneck share the same root. As a coach and mentor, the intuition, empathy, and listening that make me effective is the same thing making it hard to let people struggle productively, to trust that my absence can serve them as much as my presence, to stop giving more than the moment requires. The gift and the depletion share the same root. The pattern isn't unique to me. Ask yourself: 💫 What role do you show up in most fully? 💫 What does that role ask of you that no one else sees - the quiet cost? 💫 What does that quality cost you where it runs unchecked - where the gift becomes the tax? Seven taxes. Seven paradoxes. Each one a contradiction worth sitting with. Not to resolve. To recognize.
The willing tax is still a tax. The tax you can't name costs the most. The kindest choice in the moment is often the costliest choice over time. Seven taxes. Seven paradoxes underneath them. Can you match each paradox to the switching tax it belongs to? Reply with your answers - I'll share the key in next week's issue. No pressure. No grade. Just a moment of recognition that might tell you something about which tax you've been paying longest. COOL DOWNTo COOL DOWN today - - two questions worth sitting with this week: 1/ Which of the seven paradoxes stopped you? 2/ What does it tell you about the switch you've been making, and whether you've been choosing it or it's been choosing you? I’d really love to hear from you, every message matters. Warmly, STUDIO VIBE
