💫 The Voice That Went Quiet… and The Thunder Waiting Inside

Welcome to the Quiet Ambition newsletter - a place where we…

💫 stop holding (ourselves) back on ambition and personal growth

💫 define, build and own a meaningful legacy

💫 make the impact we’re meant to make

On our terms. Without fuss. And without selling souls.

OPEN the STUDIO DOOR

Most of us know how to read a room.

💫 We sharpen the tone when the room needs clarity.

💫 We soften the edge when the room needs warmth.

💫 We swallow the wry comment, the philosophical tangent, the inconvenient truth

Because this particular room and this particular moment needs something else from us.

This sophistication has a name - Register Switching. It serves us well and demonstrates emotional intelligence.

And like all the taxes in this series, it starts as skill and ends as something more complicated.

This week we go deeper into The Switching Tax series. The Register Switching Tax cost me my own voice for longer than I'd like to admit. What did it take to find my way back to it?

What’s happening in the studio today?

  • WARM UP - 1 QUESTION to ask yourself about the voice you've been quieting for others
  • POSTED NOTES - 1 QUOTE about the thunder hiding inside the silence
  • THE STUDIO FLOOR - 1 SEASON where I communicated in everyone else's register but my own… and the small moment that brought me back

The studio is open - let's begin.

WARM UP

Before we dive into today's work, let's warm up.

Whose register have you been performing? And what would it sound like to sound in your own resounding way?

The answer which arrives with some discomfort probably points somewhere true.

POSTED NOTES

Most of us have experienced a season of performing the wrong voice.

Not from dishonesty. But because the rooms around us needed something different.

💫 a softer edge

💫 a steadier tone

💫 a more careful register

We gave it to them, again and again, until our own voice went quiet. Quiet doesn't mean gone.

The thunder waits. And when you finally give it permission, it resurfaces in one honest conversation, one firm and unapologetic sentence, one moment of speaking exactly what you feel. Exactly as you left it.

What has your silence been holding?

THE MARQUEE

A thought I can't shake… what if some of this belonged on paper?

A letter arriving in your mailbox feels like someone showing up at your door with a pleasant surprise. Something written with intention, kept if you choose, revisited when you need it.

📬 I'm exploring a Quiet Ambition Letter Club - a monthly letter, printed keepsakes, a piece of writing that deserves paper (and maybe little surprises!), your actual mailbox.

Does this resonate with you? 👉🏽 SURVEY - 1 minute. 3 questions. Your honest answers.

THE STUDIO FLOOR

My father passed away in 2018.

Unexpectedly but peacefully. A man who…

💫 showed rather than told

💫 gave life lessons without announcing them

💫 nourished many things he would never see bear fruit

💫 raised his only daughter to think independently, stand on her own, and speak her mind

💫 crossed oceans, built businesses, constructed houses of worship across faiths, and planted seeds for a science museum

Months after he left, I realized I didn’t always speak in my voice.

The grief flooded in. And alongside it, everything else that needed carrying. Major dance commitments I had made promises to honor. My mother's stability and comfort, which became mine to help hold. The closing of my father's business. His estate. Each of these demanded a version of me that was steady, capable, clear, present.

So I became that version. Month after month.

What I didn't become (couldn't afford to become, I told myself) was the version of me who was grieving.

I communicated in the registers others needed. The competent daughter. The reliable teacher. The skilled artist. The professional who kept her word. The steady presence in rooms that needed steadiness.

My own register - warm and mostly direct, philosophically poetic, wryly funny in ways not everyone catches, practical underneath all of it - went quiet.

And I didn't notice for a long time, because useful tends to feel like enough.

Many months later, after the world had moved on and stopped asking, I finally allowed myself the space. And in that space, I heard the whisper of my own register.

So I made a promise to myself, a private, clear commitment to communicate from my own register. To stop performing the voice others needed and start speaking in the one that actually belonged to me.

At 47, it felt both overdue and exactly on time.

The moment the promise became real arrived quickly. Someone made a professional ask, personal in the way it reached me. The kind of request where both dimensions show up in the room at once, which doubles the pressure to say yes. Not a large ask. Just not something I wanted to do, and not a convenient time.

In the past, I would have calibrated. Found a way to make the yes feel genuine even when it wasn't. Performed the register the relationship seemed to require.

Instead, I said no. Firmly. Kindly. Without apology.

Not a performance of firmness, actual firmness. Not carefully considered kindness, just honest kindness. The clear, unadorned voice of what I actually felt.

Small in scale. Enormous in what it confirmed. It turned out the thunder had been there all along.

Here's what I understand now about the Register Switching Tax. The switching itself doesn't create the problem. Calibrating to your audience, meeting people where they are, adjusting tone for the relationship and the stakes, represents genuine skill. The way you connect across differences. The way you serve people in your care.

The tax turns expensive when the calibration stops being a choice. When you reach for your voice and find someone else's waiting there instead.

My natural register had to be reclaimed deliberately. Not through a workshop or a framework. Through a promise. And one small, firm, kind, unapologetic no.

Spoken in a voice I recognized as my own.

When did you last hear your own register? And what has it been quietly waiting to say?

COOL DOWN

To COOL DOWN today - can you take 30 seconds to hit REPLY and finish this sentence?

"My natural register sounds like..."

Not what you perform. The real one. I'd genuinely love to hear it.

Warmly,
Suchi
