OPEN the STUDIO DOOR

What if the most productive-looking season of your life was quietly starving your best work?

Most of us don't recognize the Task Switching Tax when we're paying it. Because it arrives dressed in language we've been taught to admire.

💫 Growth

💫 Productivity

💫 Multitasking

💫 Keeping all the plates spinning

This week we go deeper into The Switching Tax series. Today's tax is the one I understood intellectually… and paid anyway, for longer than I'd like to admit.

  • WARM UP - 1 QUESTION to ask yourself about what your busyness is actually costing your best work
  • POSTED NOTES - 1 QUOTE to reframe what your attention is actually worth
  • THE STUDIO FLOOR - 1 ATOMIC ESSAY about the season I was working constantly, stuck on everything, and avoiding the projects I cared about most

The studio is open - let's begin.

WARM UP

Before we dive into today's work, let's warm up.

What is one creative project you've been avoiding? Not because you lost interest, but because you haven't given it enough uninterrupted attention to make real progress?

The project that comes to mind first is probably the one the Task Switching Tax has been starving.

POSTED NOTES

Knowing what matters isn't the hard part. Most of us know. The hard part is letting that clarity make decisions for us, about what to take on, what to put down, and what to stop pretending deserves our best attention.

hat does clarity about what matters tell you about what doesn't?

The tank leaks with every switch, whether it’s progress or productivity. And the creative work that matters most, that needs the longest runway, falls victim to the leak first.

How full is your tank right now?

THE MARQUEE

Want to go deeper on today's theme? Cal Newport's TEDx Talk — Quit Social Media is really about something larger: what becomes possible when you stop fragmenting your attention and commit to the work that actually matters.

BONUS - Newport's book Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World is the full argument. If today's issue resonated, this book will land even harder.

THE STUDIO FLOOR

I knew about the Task Switching Tax long before I stopped paying it.

(Yes, it embarrasses me to admit it.)

I understood the research. I knew multitasking was a myth. I read the frameworks, nodded along to the productivity wisdom, and could have explained attention residue to anyone who asked.

And then I kept doing it anyway. For years.

Because the pressure to grow, to stay relevant, to honor new opportunities, it arrives faster than our best intentions. (Even when that pressure is self-administered). And so I dressed the tax up in language that made it sound like a virtue.

💫 Growth

💫 Productivity

💫 Keeping all the plates spinning

Here's what that season actually looked like.

New opportunities arrived, many from years of quiet cultivation. New ideas were surfacing that genuinely excited me. And my existing work had real momentum.

On paper, it looked like abundance. From the inside, it felt like paralysis.

I was working constantly. And I felt stuck on everything.

New choreography I had been deeply excited about sat untouched. A new talk and workshop stalled in outline form. A book I wanted to write stayed in the "someday" column, week after week.

And here's what stings most in retrospect - I started avoiding the projects I cared about most.

Not because I'd lost interest. Because I wasn't making progress. And not making progress on something you love, while working all the time, demoralizes in a gut-wrenching way.

I was stepping back from the things I most wanted to do.

  • Because I was stuck.
  • Because I was spinning too many plates.
  • Because I had too many open loops competing for the same finite pool of attention.

The turn came when I finally faced a question I had been avoiding.

What is keeping this wide portfolio actually costing me?

What I found clarified this situation.. once I actually looked. Several things consuming significant time and headspace, including things I had taken on voluntarily, weren't feeding me in a meaningful way.

Not my curiosity. Not my creative growth. Not my values. Nothing.

I had been giving enormous amounts of myself to things giving me nothing in return. So I started putting plates down.

Some temporarily, set aside with intention so I can return with full attention. Some permanently, commitments that outlived their purpose, obligations I said yes to for reasons that no longer applied.

The effect was immediate. Not in output at first. But in pressure. In headspace. In the quiet return of motivation toward the work I actually cared about.

The choreography started moving. The talk found its shape. The book became real again.

Not because I found more time, but because I stopped pretending I had more attention than I did.

The Task Switching Tax isn't really about time management. It's about what gets starved in silence when your attention is spread too thin for too long.

The antidote isn't a better system. It's the question, “What is this truly costing me? And is it worth it?”

Which plates are you spinning right now that aren't feeding you anything in return?
